Position Summary
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Financial Officer is a full-time position, accountable for the administrative, financial, and risk management operations, including the development of an economic and operational strategy, metrics aligned with that strategy, and the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems designed to preserve ministry assets.

In addition, the Officer oversees the daily functions of the Office of Business Administration and Information Services. The Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for upholding the policies set forth by the Board of Directors. The Chief Financial Officer must hold to the mission, vision, and core values of the organization.

Essential Functions

The Chief Financial Officer's responsibilities include but are not limited to the duties defined in this responsibility description.

• Manage all aspects of the ministry’s fiscal functions and performance.

• Provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports, and financial trends to assist the Chief Executive Officer, board, and other Lead Team members in performing their responsibilities.

• Review and approve all forms and filings associated with the ministry’s nonprofit status.

• Oversee the annual audit process

• Enhance, implement, and enforce policies and procedures designed to improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the ministry.

• Provide strategic financial input and leadership on decision-making issues affecting the ministry.

• Optimize bank relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash position.

• Develop a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism to include a minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs.

• Manage third-party relationships to which ministry functions have been outsourced.

• Advise, from the financial perspective, on any contracts the ministry may enter into.

• Provide direct reports with professional and personal growth opportunities.


• Participate in developing the ministry’s goals and programs as a strategic partner.

• Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning, the introduction of new programs/strategies, and regulatory actions.

Develop financial and tax strategies.

• Manage the capital request and budgeting processes.

Risk Management:

• Understand and mitigate key elements of the ministry’s risk profile.

• Monitor all open legal issues involving the ministry.

• Design and monitor reliable control systems.

• Maintain appropriate insurance coverage.

• Ensure the ministry complies with all legal and regulatory requirements, including appropriate record-keeping.

• Report risk issues to the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors.

• Maintain relations with external auditors and thoroughly research their findings and recommendations.

Staff Management:

• Coach and mentor staff to meet professional development goals.

• Manage the team workflow by planning workloads, allocating tasks, and monitoring progress against goals.

• Oversee staff schedules to maintain coverage during all hours of operation within your department.

• Review and approve timecards and PTO requests to meet the established weekly approval schedule.

• Communicate with team members regarding new initiatives, policy revisions, and ministry updates.

Board Committee:

The Chief Financial Officer is assigned to the Finance Committee as the liaison between the Business Administration Department and the Committee. The Chief Financial Officer will partner with the assigned Executive Committee member/Treasurer to act as the lead Committee member.

The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for:

• Setting the primary agenda item for the Finance Committee in conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer.

• Coordinating recurring meetings for the Finance Committee.

• Reporting committee activity to the Executive Committee and Board during scheduled meetings in the absence of the Treasurer.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• MBA with five (5) years of experience or BA with 10 years of experience in accounting and/or finance.

• Five plus (5+) years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit organizations ideally

• Management and supervisory experience.
