Will Davis Jr. Grand Rapids, Mich.: Revell, 2011. 202 pp. (Paperback).
In this deceptively simple-sounding book, author Will Davis has selected some of the more guilt-producing myths that people believe about Christianity and holds them up to a strong biblical light. The myths melt away under that scrutiny, offering freedom in the place of bondage.
Some of the lies exposed in the book include the following: “You missed My will for your life,” “I’m so disappointed in you,” “This wouldn’t be happening if you were a better Christian” and perhaps the most controversial and most potentially healing, “You’re disqualified because you’re divorced.”
Of course, few of us really believe that Jesus said those things, but many Christians live under a burden of guilt, acting as if we believed them. While he affirms the existence of sin and the Christian responsibility for right living, the author lovingly provides biblical truth and current stories to illustrate the reality of God’s grace and forgiveness, pointing out that his purpose is to “replace the terrible failed theology of condemnation … with the truth of how Jesus really feels about us.”
