Less than a month out from the primary election, around 3.8 million Alabamians are registered to vote, according to the most recent data released by the secretary of state’s office.
These numbers reflect voter registration through the end of March. Candace Payne, supervisor of voter registration for the secretary of state’s office, said April numbers will be available by the second week of May.

The Alabama Voter Registration Advisory Board discussed these numbers at its meeting on Thursday afternoon. After the meeting, Chairman John Lackey called the March numbers “fairly consistent” with the usual trends.
Around 13% of the state’s 3,795,421 registered voters are listed as inactive, which means that the secretary of state’s office has been unable to verify their addresses. Inactive voters are eligible to vote once they complete a verification process, which can often be done on election day.
“We go through the whole process of validating that address again when we get that, but no one is ever denied the right to vote because of it, unless you stay inactive through two presidential election cycles,” Lackey said about inactive voters.
Sometimes inactive voters have to complete provisional ballots on election day, which election officials count only after address verification.

Secretary of State Wes Allen, in a statement to Alabama Daily News, encouraged all Alabamians to check their registration status today ahead of the primary. To check your status, visit https://myinfo.alabamavotes.gov/.

The primary is May 19. The deadline to register to vote is May 4.
