Switchfoot
Native Tongue
Fantasy, 2019

Switchfoot albums typically aren’t for shallow thinkers, and that’s true with “Native Tongue,” a musical joyride with lyrics that make you reflect on life.

Although Switchfoot has won Dove Awards they aren’t a Christian band in the modern sense. The words “God” and “Jesus” aren’t even heard on the album, although — like the book of Esther — God’s presence is evident. One example — “Joy Invincible” — tells of a tragedy at a hospital that led the singer to declare “hallelujah.”

Most of the songs, including “Prodigal Soul,” have double meaning that could apply to a marriage or a romance.

TobyMac
The Elements
ForeFront, 2018

It’s the eighth solo album from TobyMac, and one of his best yet, featuring his unique blend of rock, R&B and hip hop.

The bass-heavy title track describes his battle with the “elements” of the world and his desire to live a godly life.

In “Starts With Me” (with Aaron Cole), he sings about racial diversity.

There was a time I was neutral about TobyMac’s music. But after I went to a concert, I became a fan.
