BUTLER ASSOCIATION
Carl Watson Wasden had a career in construction that he loved, but God made it very clear to him that he was supposed to be in ministry.
“That was something I didn’t want to do,” Wasden said in a 2015 TAB article. “I fought it and ended up in the hospital for three days. I fought it a long time. I loved construction — I still do. Eventually, I ended up in the hospital with almost a nervous breakdown until I surrendered to the ministry.”
Fast forward 54 years, and on Jan. 3 he retired after serving that long as pastor of Antioch West Baptist Church, Georgiana.
It’s the only church he’s ever attended, and before he served as its pastor, he served as a deacon and as music director. He also served as clerk-treasurer for Butler Baptist Association from 1975 to 2000.
A Korean War veteran, Wasden studied at the Baptist Bible Institute (now The Baptist College of Florida) in Graceville.
His wife, Grace, served alongside him in ministry all those years.
