Some 77% of adults in Alabama say religion is “very important” in their lives — a higher percentage than in any other state. Yet Alabamians continue to experience their share of adversity.
In the past year alone, the losses of the coronavirus pandemic, devastating tornadoes and spillover emotions from national racial tensions have challenged Alabamians.
The perseverance of Alabama’s faith communities in the face of adversity led an editorial team from National Geographic magazine to the state recently.
The article, “Got trouble? Have faith, say residents of America’s most religious state,” was published online April 16 as part of the magazine’s ongoing coronavirus coverage.
Alabama Baptists featured
Three Alabama Baptist congregations are featured in the article: Government Street Baptist Church, Mobile; Flatline Church at Chisholm, Montgomery; and Iron City Church, Birmingham.
Also featured are Rev. Cecilia Walker, executive director of chaplaincy and Clinical Pastoral Education at Princeton Baptist Medical Center, whose neighborhood was hit by a tornado in late March, and others from the chaplaincy team at Princeton.
