When First Baptist Church, Sylacauga, first asked Larry Morrison to come and serve as their minister of education and administration, he thought he would say no. He hadn’t been serving long at the church where he was, and he didn’t expect to leave.
But when he and his wife, Sallie, left the meeting, “we thought maybe God was leading us here,” Morrison said. Another twist came soon though — the next night the pastor called him and let him know he was leaving the church.
“I still felt convinced this was what God wanted us to do,” Morrison said of the decision they made 15 years ago.
He offered the church stability and consistency during two interim pastorates prior to Rick Patrick becoming pastor. Morrison has seen children grow up, and he’s been to gravesides with a lot of families.
“It’s been an amazing journey,” Morrison said. “God has a lot of good things happening here.”
The church will honor him as he retires at the end of the month with a celebration June 27, 2–4 p.m. at the church. His total ministry spans more than 43 years, including 15 years on staff at Five Points Baptist Church, Northport.
“It’s been a real joy,” Morrison said. “We’ve had some great friends and a wonderful season of ministry.”
