Carlos Gomez, pastor of Iglesia Bautista de Center Point, died July 27, 2021, due to complications from COVID-19. He was 81.
Gomez held a master’s degree in accounting and a law degree, and he had a 26-year long career in government finance before his retirement. When he retired, he started teaching a Sunday school class for Spanish speakers at First Baptist Church of Center Point. As the class grew quickly, he was ordained, and the class developed into the church he pastored for more than 20 years.
Gomez’ church received the original church charter for First Baptist Church, Center Point, when that church officially closed April 12, 2021.
Gomez’ wife, Daina, said “he was one of a kind in many ways. He never met a stranger or missed an opportunity to witness the love of God to someone. He boldly and fiercely loved the Lord, his family and his entire congregation.”
Fellow pastor Rev. Roberto Rodriguez Sierra of La Primera Iglesia Cristiana Hispana (Disciples of Christ) called Gomez “an excellent pastor, loved and respected by the entire Birmingham community and nearby areas.
“We pray for peace, comfort and strength for such a beloved pastoral family and all the congregation,” Sierra wrote in a Facebook post (translated). “We are comforted to know [he] now rests in the arms of the Lord Jesus, Whom he preached with love, surrender and passion.”
Friend Daniel Moore called Gomez a “wise man, smart, hardworking, sensitive and a good friend,” who served the Lord “with his heart and life.”
Gomez was preceded in death by a grandson, James Carlos. He is survived by Daina; his sons, David and Walter; his daughters, Susan, Sharon, Angie and Sara; and 13 grandchildren.
