Buddy Champion, pastor of First Baptist Church Trussville, was elected president of the Alabama Baptist State Convention during the Nov. 17 morning session of the annual meeting.
“I can think of no greater example of faithful servant leadership in our state than Buddy Champion,” said Blake Kersey, pastor of First Baptist Church Decatur, who nominated Champion.
Kersey said Champion is a “pastor who faithfully serves the Lord by feeding his flock God’s word and caring for them individually.”
Morgan Bailey, pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in Ranburne, was elected first vice president.
Scott Dawson nominated Bailey, noting he has served Alabama Baptist churches in the state’s “open country land to urban centers,” leading people to salvation and missions service at each church he’s served.
Bailey was not present due to the death of his father on Nov. 15.
Jarman Leatherwood, founding pastor of House of Hope and Restoration Church in Huntsville, was elected second vice president.
Craig Carlisle, director of missions for Etowah Baptist Association, nominated Leatherwood.
“If the name of your church is First Baptist Church, history verifies your claim. If it’s named for the community or the street on which you’re located, geography verifies your claim. But if your church is named House of Hope and Restoration, the only way to verify your claim is to be who you say you are,” Carlisle said. “Jarman has led HHR to live up to their name in their community.”
Billie Davis was re-elected recording secretary. Mike Jackson was elected statistical/registration secretary.
