Plans for this year’s annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention continue to develop, and this week saw two changes in the possible nominations for SBC president.
Bart Barber, pastor of First Baptist Church Farmersville, Texas, will be nominated for Southern Baptist Convention president by Matt Henslee, president of the SBC Pastors Conference.
The April 7 announcement came the day after Willy Rice, pastor of Calvary Church in Clearwater, Florida, withdrew from consideration for the role.
Rice’s withdrawal on April 6 stemmed from controversy over a church deacon being allowed to serve despite past sexual misconduct prior to becoming a Christian.
Other announced nominees as of April 8 are Florida pastor and Founders Ministries President Tom Ascol and former IMB missionary Robin Hadaway of California.
