Hunt denies allegations; this and more from Guidepost report

“To put it bluntly: I vigorously deny the circumstances and characterizations set forth in the Guidepost report. I have never abused anybody,” longtime pastor Johnny Hunt shared today (May 22). His statement follows the release of the findings by Guidepost Solutions’ investigation into the handling of sexual abuse allegations within the SBC, results that included accusations against him.

Hunt, longtime pastor of First Baptist Church Woodstock, Georgia, and former president of the Southern Baptist Convention (2008–2010), resigned as senior vice president of evangelism and leadership at NAMB on May 13, a NAMB spokesperson confirmed after the Guidepost report was made public May 22.

Others respond to overall report

Sexual Abuse Task Force members “grieve for what has been revealed … lament on behalf of survivors … and want to lead the way by publicly repenting for what has happened.”

Current lawsuits

As Southern Baptists review and unpack the nearly 300 pages of findings, at least two lawsuits involving individuals featured prominently in the report remain active. One is by survivor Hannah Kate Williams and the other by Duane Rollins against Paul Pressler.

Read more about the current lawsuits here.

And to read the full report by Guidepost, visit the task force’s website here.

The Alabama Baptist and The Baptist Paper will provide continued coverage of the report and recommendations as Southern Baptists prepare for the June 14–15 annual meeting in Anaheim.
