Sav-A-Life dedicates new ultrasound machine made possible by Alabama Baptists, ERLC

A new ultrasound machine is in service today, thanks to the donations of Alabama Baptists and others seeking to minister to pregnant women in the Birmingham area.

The new machine was dedicated Nov. 1 at Sav-A-Life’s Crestwood location, located in the Birmingham Metro Baptist Association building. The machine was donated by the Psalm 139 Project, a pro-life ministry of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, in partnership with the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, thanks to gifts from individual donors.

Joe Godfrey, retired president and CEO of Alabama Citizens Action Program and a trustee for the ERLC, was on hand for the dedication.

Pro-life commitment

“As a member of the ERLC board, I was excited to learn about the Psalm 139 Project and to have a small part in placing a new ultrasound machine in Birmingham,” Godfrey said. “We are grateful for the leadership and commitment of the ERLC to the pro-life movement in America, but we are also grateful for the support of the Birmingham Metro Baptist Association and the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions for their financial support in this specific machine being placed here in Birmingham. It is the cooperative efforts of local, state and national ministries that has made this possible.”

Bobby Reed, CFO of the ERLC, spoke at the dedication and emphasized the value of even one mother choosing life for her baby after seeing an ultrasound image.

“Every child makes a difference,” Reed said. “Every life is important.”

BMBA Executive Director Chris Crain said a prayer of dedication for the new machine.

Lisa Hogan, executive director of Sav-A-Life, said Sav-A-Life’s Birmingham-area pregnancy resource centers in Fultondale, Vestavia and Crestwood have served more than 8,000 women combined through the years.

The three Birmingham centers are all within five to eight miles of a Planned Parenthood clinic, though abortions are not legal in Alabama following the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe in June.

‘Amazing work’

“God has really done an amazing work bringing this center to the east side of Birmingham,” Hogan said. “We know the need is great to serve women and families in an unplanned pregnancy situation, and ultrasound is a critical tool as it reveals life in the womb.

“We are so grateful to the Psalm 139 Project and the Alabama State Board of Missions for making this a reality for us.”

The BMBA is building a baby boutique for expectant mothers. The Church of the Highlands and the North American Mission Board have assisted efforts to get the Crestwood Sav-A-Life up and running, Crain said.

Sav-A-Life was founded in 1980 to provide a safe place for women considering abortion. The ministry helps women in unplanned pregnancy situations by providing for both physical and spiritual needs. The ministry provides free and confidential medical services such as:

  • Pregnancy tests.
  • Ultrasounds.
  • STD/STI testing.
  • Treatment for women and men.
  • Educational programs.
  • Post-abortion recovery for moms and dads.

About Psalm 139 Project

The Psalm 139 Project is an initiative designed to make people aware of the life-saving potential of ultrasound technology in unplanned pregnancy situations and to help pregnancy centers minister to abortion-vulnerable women by providing ultrasound equipment for them to use.

One hundred percent of financial contributions designated to the Psalm 139 Project go toward purchasing ultrasound machines and providing training for workers. No ERLC Cooperative Program resources are used for these machines.

Tax-deductible gifts may be made online to the Psalm 139 Project, or via check to ERLC, 901 Commerce Street, Nashville, TN 37203.
