Officially launched in 1973, the Alabama Singing Men organization has become a staple for state convention annual meetings, evangelism conferences and other special events.
The group also consistently ministers in churches across the state and has participated in a variety of opportunities in most other states, on national platforms and internationally in Korea and Spain.
April tour stops
The 2023 ASM tour, held April 11–13, celebrated the group’s 50th anniversary and included stops at FBC Alabaster, The Baptist Church at McAdory, Central Baptist Church in Argo, FBC Trussville and FBC Birmingham.
The FBC Birmingham concert culminated the celebration tour and included a banquet and addition of the Alabama Singing Women for a few songs.
Lonette Berg of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission and Jennifer Taylor of Samford University’s Special Collection also were on hand to receive the group’s historical records, researched and compiled by the ASM anniversary committee.
Berg also presented the group with a certificate of recognition in honor of the 50th anniversary.
Rick Lance of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions shared a challenge to the group via video, and a love offering was taken for the Paul Stewart Memorial Scholarship.
Stewart was the group’s initial conductor.
Thomas R. Smith, who is the group’s fifth conductor and has served since 1999, said marking the anniversary added a significant element to the annual tour.
“It has been a special time and helped everybody refocus on the purpose of the group,” Smith shared with The Alabama Baptist.
“Our group is a great balance between musical excellence, missions and fellowship.”
Edd Brashier currently serves as president and Bill Carr is secretary. Steve Pace is president-elect.
