MPONDWE, Uganda — At least 37 students in Uganda were slain June 16 in their dormitories at a private Christian high school, and six other students were kidnapped.
Islamic terrorists armed with guns, machetes and axes attacked Lhubiriha Secondary School in Mpondwe, states Morning Star News, quoting sources. The girls who were slain had been attacked with machetes; the boys died when their dormitory was purposely set afire. Five nonstudents also perished.
One survivor said an attacker declared, “This school is propagating Christianity in Uganda and getting support from Christians in the West. Islam should be the dominant religion in Uganda.”
Morning Star states three people reportedly have been arrested.
Yoweri Museveni, president of Uganda, believes a splinter group called Allied Democratic Forces is to blame for the massacre. This group is an Islamic State affiliate working in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is across Uganda’s border from Mpondwe.
Approximately 12% of Uganda’s population is Muslim. Uganda’s constitution and laws allow for freedom of religion, including converting from one faith to another. However, Christian churches increasingly have received threats of violence, and some Christian converts have been attacked, killed or excommunicated by Muslim family members, the World Atlas reports.
