This March, there’s an opportunity for your church to get involved in missions close to home — really, there’s more than 20 opportunities.
Making a Difference Mobile is asking for volunteers to come alongside churches in Mobile Baptist Association as they reach their community with events from grilling out to hosting a dental clinic or Easter egg hunt.
“It is a good short-term missions opportunity and also an opportunity for pastors to take their church members to see ministry in the community, to see opportunities that maybe they hadn’t thought of being able to do in their local area,” said Rick Barnhart, director of the office of associational missions and church planting for the Alabama Baptist State board of Missions. “It’s an opportunity to train people to do missions at home.”
List of events
A list of the events — planned throughout the month of March — is available at alsbom.org/making-a-difference, along with other online resources to help your church plan how to get involved.
Rick Lance, SBOM executive director, said the Making a Difference Mobile outreach emphasis goes hand in hand with this year’s Alabama Baptist State Convention theme — DifferenceMakers.
“Making a Difference Mobile is a missional partnership between Mobile Baptists and the State Board of Missions,” he said. “The vast majority of our state missionaries will be part of Making a Difference Mobile during March, and I hope many more Alabama Baptists will be as well.”
Pre-Easter outreach
Thomas Wright, executive director of missions for Mobile Baptist Association, said the events will be a major help for Mobile-area churches to be able to do pre-Easter outreach.
“Church leaders of smaller membership churches often lament they cannot do outreach events because they don’t know how, or don’t have the manpower, or don’t have outreach funds,” he said. “The Making a Difference emphasis helps solve each of those reasons as well as support larger congregations who do events well.”
Lance encouraged churches to check out the website for ways they can volunteer and to access a prayer preparation guide written by Wright.
“Any Alabama Baptist church can be involved in Making a Difference Mobile through prayer, arguably the most foundational phase of the ministry effort,” he said.
