As the father of three children, singer Mark Schultz realizes the importance of his music, message and mission being centered on God’s word.
At his concerts Shultz often shares his own personal story of being adopted and adopting his daughter, hoping to inspire others to take action and respond to God’s call to open their hearts and homes to children in need.
“It must have been so hard for my biological mother to give birth to a baby and say with tears in her eyes: ‘There’s so much I want to give you that I can’t. So I’m going to love you by giving you to someone who can take care of you,’” Schultz told The Alabama Baptist.
“That’s amazing to me, and every day I’m grateful for the parents who adopted me when I was two weeks old and helped me to become the person I am today.”
Making a difference
Through the years his music and message have been well received. Shultz has sold 2 million records, garnered 10 No. 1 hit singles and received multiple Dove Award nominations. But the accolades and achievements aren’t what motivate him — he is propelled by the love of Christ and desires to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Having his songs featured on various television programs Schultz hopes will open doors for conversations with non-Christians and lead them into a relationship with Christ.
After the adoption of his daughter, Schultz recognized that his own personal story of adoption and testimony of being adopted into God’s family took on an even greater meaning.
‘Called to love’
“As Christians we are called to love,” Schultz noted. “I would hope that as people listen to these songs and identify with the struggles, that they would know that God is the same through the struggles as He is during the triumphant moments. God’s love and faithfulness never change.
“I grew up wanting to make my parents think they made a good choice when they chose me, so I wanted to be good at singing or be a good athlete. When my wife and I adopted our daughter, I realized there’s nothing she could do to make me question our decision. Love is what makes the difference.”
