Lowerytown Missionary Baptist Church, West Blocton, celebrated its 100th anniversary Feb. 18, beginning with a slide presentation of the church’s history.
Many of the members dressed in clothes from the early 1900s, including Roy Lowery, the pastor. Greg Bruner, deacon chair, read a congratulation letter sent from West Blocton First Baptist Church. Additional music was provided by the choir and ladies chorus.
Anna Speir, commissioner for the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission, presented a plaque to the pastor. Guests included Bill Russell, associational missions strategist, and his wife, Gloria. Johnnie Pope, a member of the church for 82 years, also was present with his wife, GayNell, who helped provide special music with Lowery, Jamie Bruner and Johnnie Creel.
To highlight the celebration, the foyer was filled with displays and photos of the church’s history.
