The 11th Annual K-LOVE Fan Awards was full of music, memorials and fun. Held at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville May 26, awards and accolades were given not only to musicians but to films/TV shows, podcasts, athletes and books. The awards show aired on TBN May 31.
Hosts for this year’s event were Brandon Lake, singer/songwriter, and Sadie Robertson Huff, author and podcaster and daughter of “Duck Dynasty’s” Willie Robertson. The theme was “encourage and faith.”
The fun began with Lake and Huff giving out “Brandie Awards,” so-named by combining “Brandon” and “Sadie.”
Brandie Award winners were:
- The Pep Award – Logan Cain, allegedly a former cheerleader.
- Beard that Rivals the Robertsons [of Duck Dynasty] – Crowder.
- Whitest Sneakers – Phil Wickham, unashamedly wearing bright white sneakers to the show.
- Crazy Cat Lady – Katy Nichole, who had a couple of cat plushies with her.
At the end of the show, Matt Maher offered jokes about Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus in the series “The Chosen” and stars in the docuseries “Jonathan and Jesus.” Maher reminded Roumie that he didn’t need to multiply the bread at Olive Garden because it was already unlimited and that when Maher insulted Roumie during a trade of insults, Roumie should have seen it coming.
In the midst of the songs and fun, the artists took time to celebrate the lives of Mandisa and Gabe Patillo.
Mandisa was a Christian recording artist who began her professional journey by finishing in ninth place on Season 5 of “American Idol.” She released six albums throughout her career and was known best for her album and title song, “Overcomer,” for which she won a Grammy.
Mandisa died April 14 of unknown causes.
Another icon in the contemporary Christian music world died around the same time. Gabe Patillo, known for being part of DCTalk and TobyMac for more than 20 years, lost his battle with cancer April 12.
The awards program showcased performers, worship leaders, podcasters and other Christian artists, but the bottom line was about glorifying Jesus. As it ended with the song, “Praise,” led by Elevation Worship, the audience was on their feet singing.
