LAHORE, Pakistan — A Catholic factory worker was tortured to death in Pakistan, and five Christian sanitation workers died of noxious gases for lack of protective gear.
It is not uncommon in Pakistan for Christians to be employed as sanitation workers and sent into hazardous situations without protective gear, rights activists told Christian Daily International and Morning Star News.
Two Christians died June 11 in Sindh province and three on June 12 in Punjab province from exposure to toxic gases. Another who died in the Sindh tragedy was Hindu.
Critical condition
One Christian worker in Punjab province is in critical condition.
According to the news services, all the men were sent into dangerous situations without appropriate safety gear.
In an unrelated case, a Muslim factory owner, his son and three Muslim workers tortured Waqas Salamat to death June 6 in Lahore after one owner accused Salamat of theft, his mother said.
She told the news services that her family had offered to pay restitution even though they knew Salamat was innocent. Instead of accepting the offer, the Muslims beat and shocked Salamat until he collapsed.
Pakistan is No. 7 on Open Doors’ 2024 World Watch List of places most difficult to be a Christian.
