Website with CHOOSE Act qualifications, application info launched

More information is now available for families, schools and other education services providers about how they can participate in the state’s new tax credit for education.

The Creating Hope and Opportunity for Our Students’ Education Act approved this year provides up to $7,000 in tax credits for families to use on private school education or other education options. Home school families can receive up to $2,000 in credits per child, capped at $4,000 per family.

The credits will be in effect for the 2025–2026 school year and can be used on K-12 expenses including school tuition, tutoring, educational therapies and other qualified education expenses at approved ESPs across the state.

Eligibility and application information for schools and families is now available at chooseact.alabama.gov.

Lawmakers have pledged at least $100 million per year for the program. For the first two years, eligibility is limited to students with special needs, students of active-duty service members and students living in households with incomes not exceeding 300% of the federal poverty level of the preceding year, which in 2023, was $90,000 a year for a family of four.

The legislation was a GOP priority in the most recent legislative session.

“Every Alabama student should have the opportunity to receive a high-quality education that meets their individual needs,” Gov. Kay Ivey said in a statement Wednesday. “The CHOOSE Act is School Choice for a Strong Alabama – a wonderful opportunity for eligible families to receive assistance that will have a positive impact on their students’ academic future and the future of our great state.”

The family application process for the 2025–2026 school year will be open Jan. 2 through April 7 next year. Award notifications will go out in early May.
