On Jan. 13, as 36 inmates graduated from the Alabama Department of Corrections‘ Residential Substance Abuse Treatment program, something new was included — 15 of them had also participated in a new opioid-specific program.
The Medication for Opioid Use Disorder program was initially piloted at Donaldson Correctional Facility in Jefferson County then expanded to the state’s other RSAT program locations — Bibb, Bullock, Easterling, St. Clair, Staton, Ventress and Tutwiler Women’s correctional facilities.
The capacity for MOUD in the RSAT dorms across all eight correctional facilities is 200 beds with a vision for
continued growth, according to ADOC. There are currently 191 inmates actively participating in MOUD treatment, and ADOC continues to develop and expand the program.
According to ADOC, all of its drug rehabilitation programs including the new MOUD program help to reduce prison violence, disciplinaries and overdoses in ADOC facilities. Sixty-five percent of inmates across the U.S. have a substance use disorder.
