KHARTOUM, Sudan — Seven Christians have been sentenced to years in prison on false theft charges after being tortured into confessing, according to an attorney.
The seven members of Sudanese Church of Christ were arrested Jan. 14 in Shendi in Sudan’s River Nile state, reports Morning Star News. That same day, the seven were tortured into confessing and put on trial, said attorney Shinbago Mugaddam. He called the seven “youths.”

The group was arrested by military intelligence agents of the Sudanese Armed Forces. The agents not only accused the Christians of theft but also of backing the Rapid Support Forces, Mugaddam said.
Both the SAF and the RSF are Islamist paramilitary groups that have been at war with each other since April 2023.
The seven Christians previously had fled from the war in Khartoum, Mugaddam said.
Muraad Morjaan Anglo, Akram Omer Al Mahadi, Mutaz Al Seed Ibrahim, Amjad Mustafa and one other Christian were given seven-year prison terms. Algab Mohamed Al Mahadi Atroon and Murkus Moses Allajabu were sentenced to five years, said Mugaddam.
Sudan is No. 5 on Open Doors’ 2025 World Watch List of places most difficult to be a Christian.
