Wallace Henley, former pastor in Alabama, died June 24 in Houston, Texas. He was 83.
Henley most recently served for 20 years as a staff pastor of a large church in Houston before retiring in 2019.
He served on staff of several Alabama Baptist churches and was pastor of Old Spanish Fort Baptist Church in Spanish Fort and McElwain Baptist Church in Birmingham (now Hope Community Church).
Henley graduated from Samford University in Birmingham and attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
During his more than 50 years of pastoral ministry, Henley and his wife, Irene, led leadership teams to many European countries, including those in the former Soviet bloc as well as countries in Africa. He worked in the White House under President Richard Nixon (1970–1973) and served as president of the Alabama Baptist State Convention during the 1980s. While in Texas, he was chief of staff for Rep. John Culberson. He has written more than 20 books.
He is survived his wife, Irene, as well as two children and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
