Jarman Leatherwood, pastor of House of Hope and Restoration Church in Huntsville, will be nominated as president of the Alabama Baptist State Convention during the upcoming annual meeting in Huntsville. He previously served two one-year terms as first vice president (currently finishing up his second year) and two one-year terms as second vice president. He also preached the convention sermon in 2023.
Robert Mullins, executive director of Madison Baptist Association, announced Oct. 7 he will be nominating Leatherwood. House of Hope and Restoration Church is part of Madison Association.
“Here are the reasons I am honored to nominate Jarman Leatherwood for president of the Alabama Baptist Convention,” Mullins shared with The Alabama Baptist.
1. “Jarman is a faithful brother in Christ who deeply loves the Lord, his family and his church. His life reflects a genuine commitment to following Jesus.
2. “Jarman is a true fisher of people — men, women, boys and girls. Through the work of his church, House of Hope and Restoration, he has shown that making disciples and impacting the community are central to his ministry,” Mullins said.
3. “Jarman is a friend to many and an encouragement to all. He is unwavering in his dedication to the mission of Christ and passionate about helping others grow in their relationship with the Lord.
4. “Jarman faithfully uses his God-given gifts to serve. He is a powerful preacher and teacher of God’s Word who lives what he proclaims. He empowers others to follow Jesus and lead others to do the same. His support has equipped and encouraged numerous church plants and church planters,” Mullins continued.
5. “Above all, Jarman is a disciple of Jesus. His love for the Lord is evident in everything he does, and he seeks to shine the light of Christ everywhere he goes.”
Leatherwood has served in various leadership roles across the state convention and in Madison Association as well as Etowah Baptist Association. Leatherwood also has served with Samford University’s Ministry Training Institute.
At press time, no other nominees had been announced for the role of president, which is a one-year term. The president is elected by messengers to the state convention each year and can serve two back-to-back terms.
Nominees for vice presidents
Ryan Whitley, pastor of CrossPoint Church in Trussville, is the only announced nominee for first vice president. He previously served two one-year terms as second vice president and will be nominated by Daven Watkins, pastor of First Baptist Church Pelham.
Mat Alexander, pastor of FBC Gadsden, is the only announced nominee for second vice president. He will be nominated by Daniel Atkins, pastor of Taylor Road Baptist Church in Montgomery.
State convention officer elections will take place during the Nov. 11–12 annual meeting at Whitesburg Baptist Church in Huntsville.
