Jeff Meyers, pastor of First Baptist Church Opelika, died unexpectedly last night (Dec. 4) from a medical condition, according to a report this morning (Dec. 5) from the staff and deacons at the church. He was 52.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the news that our beloved Pastor Jeff Meyers went home to be with the Lord last night. As a church family, we grieve this tremendous loss together, even as we hold tightly to the hope and promise of eternal life in Christ that Pastor Jeff preached so faithfully,” the message on the church’s Facebook page reads.
“Pastor Jeff served our church with unwavering devotion, compassion and humility. His love for God and for people was evident in every sermon he preached, every prayer he prayed and every conversation he shared. His absence will be deeply felt, yet his legacy of faithfulness and love will continue to shape our community for years to come.
“Please join us in praying for his family — prayers for comfort, peace and strength during this incredibly difficult time. … May we lean on one another, reflect on the hope we have in Christ and trust in God’s nearness to the brokenhearted,” the staff and deacons noted, quoting Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Years of ministry service
Meyers, a native of Desoto, Texas, joined the FBC Opelika staff in 2016. An author, Meyers served more than 30 years as a pastor and evangelist. He held degrees from Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
In addition to the preaching and teaching of the Bible, Meyers also spent time answering questions regarding the Bible, Christianity and faith at youth camps, on the radio and special live events. “Admittedly, his favorite time of the week was the weekly Question and Answer Bible study he hosted before a live audience titled ‘Ask Jeff,’ ” according to the staff and deacons. One popular live event Meyers hosted was a conversation with Bruce Pearl, then Auburn men’s basketball coach, in 2022.
Meyers is survived by his wife, Traci, and three sons, Marshall, George and Jonathan.
Details about service arrangements will be added once they are announced.
