Päivi Räsänen, a Finnish parliamentarian, has announced plans to appeal her criminal conviction issued by the Finnish Supreme Court for alleged “hate speech” over statements expressing Biblical views on marriage and sexuality.

Räsänen’s appeal to the European Court of Human Rights challenges the Finnish Supreme Court decision that found Räsänen, Lutheran bishop Juhana Pohjola and Luther Foundation Finland guilty of making a 2004 pamphlet defining Biblical marriage and sexuality available to the public and “kept available to the public opinions that insult homosexuals as a group on the basis of their sexual orientation.”
Key moment
The appeal to the ECHR stands as the last legal opportunity for her conviction to be overturned and could serve as a critical turning point for free speech rights in Finland and Europe.
