The Supreme Court on Tuesday (June 2) announced its decision (6-3) to allow Alabama to use a heavily debated congressional map that’s considered favorable to Republicans in this year’s elections, reported the Associated Press and other news outlets. This latest development puts the breaks on a lower court ruling that contends the redistricting plan discriminates against Black people, according to the report.
With this decision, the high court has granted the state’s emergency appeal to use a map it adopted three years ago that has “a majority-Black population in just one of its seven congressional districts,” AP reported.
In this decision, Ketanji Brown Jackson, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor dissented.
