Walter Bell Staggs Jr., chaplain and lay minister from Mobile, died June 25. He was 85.
Staggs was a member of Cottage Hill Baptist Church, Mobile, and served as a trauma chaplain for eight years with what is now USA Health University Hospital.
He also served with Gideons International, the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team and as director and chief financial officer of a nonprofit to support missionaries and pastors in Nigeria.
A certified public accountant by trade, Staggs worked full time in accounting and finance roles throughout his career.
He held a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a law degree from the University of Alabama as well as a master of divinity in hospital chaplaincy from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
