A Somali woman reportedly has been confined to a room, beaten and deprived of sufficient nourishment as punishment for putting her faith in Jesus Christ.
Sources told Morning Star News that Mariam Fatuma, 20, has been mistreated by her Muslim uncle, with whom she has lived for years since her parents separated.
The uncle refuses to release her until Fatuma’s father consults with him.
Fatuma accepted Christ in February, sources said, and her conversion was discovered Sept. 27 by a female cousin who heard her praying in the name of Christ.
Since then the Muslim uncle has confined Fatuma.
Great caution needed
An underground fellowship in Somalia that is aware of her situation said great caution should be exercised in assisting her to avoid worsening the confinement and abuse.
World Watch List
Somalia is No. 2 on Open Doors’ 2026 World Watch List of the 50 places most difficult to be a Christian. Referencing information from the U.S. State Department, Morning Star noted Somalia’s constitution declares Islam the state religion and sharia the official law.
