Youth serve others at M-Fuge

Youth and adults from several Alabama Baptist churches learned this summer that it really is more blessed to give than to receive during M-Fuge (Ministry Fuge) at the University of Mobile.

M-Fuge is a weeklong Christian camp that combines Bible study and worship with personal ministry opportunities for middle and high school youth and their chaperones.

Rather than going to camp just to have fun, they give a week of their summer to serve children and youth in other churches.

In addition to working in various ministries throughout the week, campers at M-Fuge have the opportunity to take part in Bible study, church group devotions and nightly worship services.

Sixteen-year-old Jennifer Deskins, a member of Crestline Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, worked in children’s ministry during her week at camp, including a backyard Bible club at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, Mobile. In leading Bible study, Deskins said she found that teachers can sometimes learn a lot from their students.

“I had this girl who was 11 years old come up to me after Bible study and she wanted to talk to me about the Bible,” Deskins said. “We sat there and read through about four chapters of it.

That really stuck out in my mind because she really taught me a lot,” Deskins said. “She taught me that even at a young age, you can teach people.”

M-Fuge has grown from one pilot camp in 1995 to nine camps in 2000, two of which are international locations.

This summer almost 15,750 youth and adults contributed more than 300,000 hours of community service worldwide in the name of Jesus Christ.

M-Fuge is sponsored by LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention.
