Flora new DOM for Cherokee Association

The Cherokee Baptist Association welcomed its first new director of missions (DOM) in 21 years with a reception Feb. 4.

Danny Flora and his family were recognized during the reception by members from 19 churches in the Cherokee Association, along with DOMs from surrounding areas and representatives from the State Board of Missions.

He succeeds Herman Edge, who retired Dec. 31, 2000, after serving as Cherokee DOM for 21 years.

Flora is a native of Fort Payne where he was an active member of Gault Avenue Baptist Church. He is a graduate of William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Miss., Baptist Bible Institute (now the Baptist College of Florida) in Graceville, Fla., and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Flora served at several churches in Collins, Miss., during his seminary training.
Following his graduation, he served at Eastwood Baptist Church in Marietta, Ga., for five years.

He returned to Alabama in 1986 to serve as pastor of Sand Rock Baptist Church, Collinsville (Cherokee Assoc.), for 10 years. Following that, he served as pastor of Kyuka Baptist Church, Attalla (Etowah Assoc.), 1996–2000.

Identifying one of his goals as DOM, the new director of missions said he wants to see more unified efforts between churches in regard to missions work.

“I hope to help the churches to be more cooperative toward missions efforts and evangelism,” he said.
“I want to create a strong base of resource information and just be the pastor’s pastor,” Flora added of the work he hopes to accomplish in Cherokee County.

Flora and his wife, Cecelia (a native of Corner), have two sons. Adrian is a student in business management at Jacksonville State University and Alex is a senior at Sand Rock High School who plans to attend Auburn University.

The Cherokeµe Baptist Association was founded in 1833 and currently serves 40 churches.
