Friendship Baptist Church, Pine Apple, recently honored Greg Oakley for serving more than 50 years as chairman of deacons (1945–2004).
The church presented him a certificate during a Sunday morning worship service.
According to Noel Walker, interim pastor of Friendship, “He was honored because of his good influence and spiritual leadership in his commitment to the work of our Lord Jesus.”
While no longer chairman of deacons, Oakley remains active in church and still attends all of the deacons meetings, and is an active worker in the church, along with his wife, Ethel. He is currently serving as the church’s assistant music director and as an assistant Sunday School teacher.
“Friendship Baptist Church has stood the test of time because of men like Greg Oakley,” said Melvin Stanford, current chairman of deacons. “We are glad that God gave him to us.” (TAB)
