I was appalled at the recent article by Bob Terry concerning pastors’ salaries. According to the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible — which I am sure y’all don’t use — if a man doesn’t work, he shouldn’t eat.
Preaching is not a vocation; it’s a calling. And if a man is truly called to preach, he will preach regardless of the salary.
It seems that we have too many momma called and daddy called “preachers” who have gone into the ministry because they are too sorry to work.
My father has been a Baptist pastor for over 30 years. He has always held a steady job.
He understood that in order to preach the truth, he needed an income that did not rely on the people he was more than likely to offend by preaching what the Book said.
That is the problem in today’s church. You have a preacher making over $100,000 a year, and he doesn’t want to offend the folks who are paying his salary so he tickles their ears. Seems like I have read a warning about that, at least in the KJV.
I have been the song leader, deacon, treasurer and Sunday School teacher in my church for over 20 years and have never taken a dime in pay.
I just wish all other so-called “ministers” would follow my path.
