Scarlette O’Hara was recently crowned Miss University of Mobile 2006. A senior musical theatre major from Mobile, she will compete in the 2006 Miss Alabama pageant, a preliminary that leads to the Miss America pageant.
“I really wanted to represent the University of Mobile at Miss Alabama,” O’ Hara said. “I’m excited that I get to represent my school and pour back into the lives of those who have helped me in Mobile. I’m really excited that I’ll be able to affect children in Mobile.”
O’ Hara, the daughter of Donna O’ Hara, sang “Art Is Calling for Me” from Victor Herbert’s “The Enchantress” during the talent portion of the Feb. 4 competition. She tied for first place in both the talent and swimsuit competitions and received approximately $1,500 in scholarship money.
O’Hara’s platform is titled The Gift in Me, a program to help underprivileged children develop performance-based talent. O’ Hara has done volunteer work in conjunction with a local scholarship development program, the World Youth Federation and Toys for Tots in the Mobile area.
“I’ll work with children on developing their God-given abilities, whether singing, dancing or theatrical abilities, which will give them self-esteem and confidence in the gift God has given them,” O’ Hara said.
Miss University of Mobile serves as the official hostess of the university. Her responsibilities include participation in alumni activities, homecoming, dedications, receptions and various community and student events.
Other Miss University of Mobile pageant finalists were Amy Robertson, first runner-up, who also tied for first place with O’ Hara in the swimsuit competition; Kourtney Campbell, second runner-up and Miss Congeniality; and Jaye Herrod, who tied for first place with O’ Hara in the talent competition.
