Organist Ballew honored for 50 years of service

Crestway Baptist Church, Birmingham, in Birmingham Baptist Association recently honored Howard Ballew for his 50 years of service as the church’s organist. Ballew was recognized and presented with a plaque and a gift during a Sunday morning service at Crestway Baptist, where Jimmy Wilson serves as pastor.

Described as low-key, reserved, quiet and selfless by those who know him, Ballew is an accomplished musician as well as a faithful servant of God. “At no time has anyone ever had to question if Howard would be present to fulfill his role at the organ,” said former Crestway member Randy Davis. “He is always there, during all worship services, revivals and other special services. The same holds true anytime he is called upon for such needs as funerals or weddings.”

For many years, Ballew served as organist while also teaching full time in the Birmingham city school system. “Fifty years of continuous service is so rare this day and time that it is almost beyond the average person’s imagination,” Davis said. “It should serve as an inspiration to all Christians.”
