The Browns

During the past few years, the Browns have earned the attention of many southern gospel fans as they’ve become increasingly popular on the concert circuit — and that’s no small feat considering they live in the southern gospel hotbed of Iowa.

Despite personality to spare and nominations for Singing News Horizon Group of the Year, the Browns have needed a top-shelf recording that truly demonstrated their potential in terms of both song quality and production. Under the guidance of producer Roger Talley, the Browns now find themselves with the album they’ve needed all along.

Eleven songs make up “Hope,” and there are a few that truly stand out. “My Only Hope,” “Livin,’ Askin,’ Walkin’” and “Hosanna” are songs that merit extra play, but the real jewel is “The Way He Said My Name.” This song could, with proper promotion, be the group’s first Top 40 song. Two other potential heavy airplay songs are “Mighty Long Way” and “It Took the Cross” — and neither one of them should be kicked out of radio single consideration.

Though there is room for improvement (and that can be said for any group on the road today), the Browns have come a long way since they first entered a recording studio. Their experiences in high-profile venues (like theater shows in Branson, Mo.) have taught them valuable lessons. And knowing they can’t rely on the “cute kids” appeal forever, the Browns have started concentrating on the things that will give them longevity. “Hope” is the pleasant result of improved vocal performances and stronger songs.
