Alabama Baptists had the second-highest numerical increase in baptisms from 2005 to 2006 in the Southern Baptist Convention, according to the North American Mission Board (NAMB).

With an increase of 1,070 from 21,369 baptisms in 2005 to 22,439 in 2006, Alabama ranked second behind Florida, which had an increase of 3,785 baptisms from one year to the next. Sammy Gilbreath, evangelism director for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM), accepted the award for the state during NAMB’s recent state leadership meeting.

States were also honored for the highest total number of baptisms and the highest percentage increase in baptisms from one year to the next.

Richard Alford, who recently retired as an associate in the SBOM office of associational missions and church planting, was also honored by NAMB during the meeting for his 28-year contribution to church planting and evangelism. (TAB)
