Sand Mountain Baptist Association’s third annual evangelism conference, Manna on the Mountain, was held Aug. 15–16 at New Home Baptist Church, Pisgah, where David Smith is pastor. According to David Patty, director of missions, the conference could be summed up in one word — awesome. “This was definitely our biggest associational event ever,” he said. “It really grew from last year, and the response from our churches has been fantastic.”
Of the 30 churches in Sand Mountain Association, at least 28 participated in the conference, Patty said. Attendance at the evening services was between 600 and 700; an estimated 400 people attended the Aug. 16 morning service. Speakers for the event included Ted Traylor, pastor of Olive Baptist Church, Pensacola, Fla.; Jerry Vines, retired pastor of First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Fla.; Phil Hoskins, pastor of Higher Ground Baptist Church, Kingsport, Tenn.; Bill Stafford, an evangelist from Chattanooga, Tenn.; Sam Wolfe, an evangelist from Huntsville; and Fred Luter, pastor of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, New Orleans.
Musical guests were Christian recording artists Allison Durham Speer and Chris McDaniel. The Sand Mountain Association Choir, composed of about 70 choir members from churches across the association, led in worship. “It was such a blessing — the speakers, the music, everything. And all the conference leaders gave us positive feedback about the blessings they received, too,” Patty said.
According to him, plans are under way for the association’s fourth evangelism conference, scheduled for summer 2008.
