Helping WMU

I am alarmed by actions being taken by conventions (both state and national) to control the Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) (referring specifically to recent actions as reported in the article “North Carolina WMU to leave convention control” in the Aug. 30 issue of The Alabama Baptist).

I am grateful for the role women have played in the development and promotion of the Baptist missions programs. Beginning with the concern, prayer, effort and fund raising to send missionaries to foreign lands to spread God’s love to the world and as churches accepted the role of the Great Commission, they continued their prayerful support of missionary activities by publicizing missions accomplishments and needs. This continues to be done peacefully and harmoniously.

We as church members can have little effect on conventions by speaking out. We can, however, affect them financially by designating a portion of our offerings (not tithes) to the WMU Foundation.
