Thanks to its annual Judgment Day drama, the last week in October is always busy for Cottage Hill Baptist Church, Pleasant Grove. But this year was extra busy, with a record-breaking crowd of more than 1,000 people attending the walk-through presentation Oct. 27–31. By the time the last person had toured the Judgment Day scenes, 135 professions of faith and 147 other decisions had been made for Christ. “The five-day totals were higher than any Judgment Day we’ve had so far,” said church member and deacon Wesley Higgins. “We were amazed at the response.”
Judgment House 2007 depicted the lives of several youths and how the decisions they made affected their earthly and eternal lives. Higgins, whose wife, Christy, is Cottage Hill Baptist’s children’s minister, portrayed Jesus in the drama. Not only was he touched by the reactions he saw to the drama’s message but he also was reminded anew of how God works through His people to accomplish great things. “What an impact the church can make for people who have never heard about Jesus,” he said.
Since Judgment Day first began as an alternative to Halloween haunted houses more than a decade ago, hundreds of decisions have been made for Christ. Work on this year’s production began a little later than usual, but in the end, the drama came together surprisingly well, Higgins said. “It could have only been a God thing.”
Cottage Hill is in Bessemer Baptist Association. Jerry Sherrell serves as pastor.
