Family Status: Widowed after 55 years of marriage to Madge Bradford, three children, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren

Bert Cornell Outlaw has been a member of First Baptist Church, Jackson, since he was 8 years old. But it was during World War II, while Outlaw served in the Army, that he said the Lord spoke powerfully to him and forever changed his life. Now at 97, he is still an active church member, who sings in the senior choir.

Q: What led you to the Lord?
A: I’ve known Him since I’ve been a child. I really came to know Him on my trip overseas during World War II. He really spoke to me there, and now I know He’s really there.
Q: Why have you stayed
involved in the church
over the years?
A: I look forward to church life. I am not able to go to church as much anymore because of my health, but if I can’t, I always listen to about four or five TV sermons. I just have to have my sermons.
Q: How have family and church
members supported you?
A: My whole family was Methodist, but I always went to the Baptist church, and they never seemed to mind. In church, everyone is real sweet and everyone is good to me. I have been so blessed. I love the people. I’m happier now than I probably ever have been.
Q: What difference has being
a Christian made in your life?
A: It has made me realize more about God and the things that you are supposed to live for. He keeps pouring blessings out, and I just have to ask why. But He’s been so good. I’ve just tried to live according to the Bible.
