Hoover minister charged with abuse

An Alabama Baptist music minister was arrested March 13 in Hoover on charges of child abuse and a sex offense, which may have occurred at a previous church in Maryland in the 1990s.

Timothy Mann, who served as minister of music at Shades Crest Baptist Church, Bluff Park, for more than six years, was released on bond March 14. At press time, he was to turn himself in to Maryland authorities by March 21 or face a second arrest.

"While we are praying for all people who are hurting because of these allegations, we are also trying to minister to Tim’s wife and children and are providing support for them through the compassion of Christ," said Dennis Foust, pastor of Shades Crest Baptist. "We are ministering to one another, seeking to provide a climate for processing the many emotions that come with shock and grief. … As pastor, I am so proud of how our people have responded with spiritual maturity and the fruit of the Spirit."

Foust noted that he is not aware of any abuse committed during Mann’s time at Shades Crest.

Mann had previously served as youth minister at Brookwood Baptist Church, Mountain Brook, from 1987 until 1991.

In light of the charges, he resigned from Shades Crest as well as from his post as an adjunct instructor of music at Samford University in Birmingham.  (TAB)
