It happened in Bandera County, Texas. On a rugged ranch west of San Antonio, Dennis was chasing a trophy goat.
He downed his prize at twilight. Securing his four-wheeler, he was speeding down the steep hillside in the dark. His friends said that Dennis did not see the embankment in time, as he skidded over it. He fell 20 feet and fractured his skull. They pronounced 50-year-old Dennis dead at University Hospital.
When I read of this tragic episode, I thought to myself, "How sad. He gave his life for a goat."
What are you giving your life for?
Perhaps you are chasing trophies in the dark — a trophy education, a trophy car, a trophy job, a trophy house, a trophy family. Chasing trophies in the dark can lead to catastrophic results.
Tony Dungy knows a lot about trophies. The coach of the Indianapolis Colts won sport’s megaprize — the Super Bowl. After the monumental win, a reporter asked coach Dungy what it felt like.
The worldwide audience provided coach Dungy a platform for sharing his faith in Christ. He explained, "My ultimate prize is a personal relationship to Jesus Christ. My favorite Scripture is Matthew 16:26, ‘What does it profit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his soul?’"
Too many people trade everything for nothing. A lot of folks have great commitments to small causes.
There is a better way. Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. He who follows after me will not walk in darkness but they will have the light of life."
Do not chase trophies in the dark and experience disastrous results. Instead step out of your darkness into the light, love and liberating power of Jesus Christ. As you follow King Jesus, His light will provide protection, direction, correction and transformation. What’s more, when you walk in the light, you can discern goats from sheep and trash from trophies.
So connect your life to Jesus, and your darkness will be transformed into His guiding light.
