Vivian Taylor is affectionately known as “Mrs. WMU,” having been the Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) director for 30 years at First Baptist Church, Selma. She also served as director of Girls’ Auxiliary (now Girls in Action or GA) for about 15 years and taught various Sunday School classes for 50 years.
Q: What led you to do this work?
A: I grew up in the church (and) in the missions organizations. We had a wonderful missionary church, and all of the leaders were such a big influence in my life. They (the church) asked me to help with the GAs and teach Sunday School when I was 18 or 19.
Q: Why have you done
this activity?
A: I just felt in my heart that I was saved to serve. I prayed about what they asked me to do, and He just led me through from one thing to another.
Q: How are you currently
involved?
A: I go to church, WMU and Sunday School, but I don’t have any responsibility now because of bad health.
Q: What did you get from it?
A: I am thankful for everything the Lord has let me do. Had I said no, I would have missed all of His blessings. It blessed me more than anybody.
Q: How have you been affected
by this work?
A: The Lord has been so good. I wouldn’t have made it through a lot of things if He hadn’t been there, and I know He’s not through with me yet. I am thankful that He said, “Lo, I am with you always.” It’s just made me know how much He loved all of us, and I just pray that more and more people will get to know that love.
