Want to know God?

Want to know God?

Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Jasper

Here in the South, we often refer to someone as a “good ole boy.” What exactly is a good ole boy? Are you a good ole boy (or girl)? Or better yet, are you a good person?

Take a little test to see if you are a good person.

Question 1: Have you ever told a lie? What do we call a person who tells lies? That’s right — a liar.

Question 2: Have you ever stolen anything? What do we call a person who steals? That’s right — a thief.

Question 3: Have you ever used God’s name as a byword or cuss word or in a flippant manner? The Bible says we are not to use the Lord’s name in vain. This is called blasphemy.

Question 4: Have you ever lusted after someone who was not your spouse? The Bible says that if you look on a woman with lust in your heart, you have committed adultery.

So now, let’s review. We are trying to see if you are a good person. Think about it; if you answered yes to questions 1, 2, 3 and 4, then by your own admission, you are a lying, thieving, blaspheming adulterer. Doesn’t sound good, does it? And that is only looking at four of the Ten Commandments.

Well the reality is that no one is really good. There are no “good ole boys” after all. All men are guilty of breaking God’s laws, and all lawbreakers will stand guilty before the judgment bar of God. There are penalties for sin and because God is a holy and just God, He must punish sin. The Bible says the wages (what we have earned) for our sin is death, not just physical but spiritual death as well.

There is only one hope for guilty sinners. Sinners need help from someone who can save them from their deserved death. Friend, that help is found only in the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. By His death, He paid the price you owe, and by His resurrection, He verified that He was the Savior of men. You are commanded and invited to repent of your sins and believe in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Want to know God? You will find Him only in His Son, Jesus Christ. Will you turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus Christ today?
