Cleland McAfee wrote these words in 1903, filled with agony from the passing of his two nieces. Many people have found solace in this beautiful hymn. It is a song of deepest care for loved ones.
Perhaps you are reading this column knowing that members of your family share a faith that you do not. Do you know God? Central to our faith is the community of love that we share. Families give their love to each other and wish to share that experience together.
Can we know God? You can surely rest in the assurance that He knows you. It is through my family and friends that I have most deeply known God. Your loved ones want you to know Him as well.
For so much of my life, I lived as though I was indestructible. It is easy to do that — my own aging has shown me otherwise. The longer we live, we become more aware that we have needs, that we are vulnerable. If we listen, perhaps we even “hear” God speaking to us through the events of our lives. We all need God. Whether we want Him or not, He is still there.
Acknowledge your need. We draw life and breath from God, but knowing God allows us to more fully find meaning in life.
Pray for forgiveness. God is faithful and just to forgive.
Dedicate your life to serving Him. You will find fulfillment beyond your wildest imagination.
