Puckett gets key national disaster relief award

The mastermind behind Alabama Baptists’ disaster relief efforts — Tommy Puckett — recently garnered his spot in the Southern Baptist disaster relief "hall of fame."

Puckett, director of the office of men’s ministries and disaster relief for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM) for almost 18 years, received the North American Mission Board’s (NAMB) Robert E. Dixon Award April 25.

The award is presented annually to a Baptist leader who has given "a lifetime of service that helped shape the course of Southern Baptist Disaster Relief," according to NAMB’s Web site. "Individuals nominated are considered pioneers or key people who have contributed to disaster relief in a manner that has made a significant impact on the ministry, both inside and outside their state."

The recipient is selected by a vote of the state disaster relief directors.

"I am most humbled to be considered by my Southern Baptist Convention peers for such a distinguished award," Puckett said. "It is the highest award given to anyone who has served in disaster relief, but the award is really just representative of the hundreds and thousands of other volunteers who have given their all as unsung heroes over their years of service."

Rick Lance, executive director of the SBOM, said, "Tommy Puckett epitomizes the term ‘servant leader.’ He quietly, methodically and effectively serves the Lord, especially in a time of crisis, such as in disaster relief efforts.

"No one can fully comprehend the scope and substance of his work until he or she has walked alongside him in one of the situations where Tommy has been called into action due to a natural disaster," Lance said. "For the last nine years, I have viewed his ministry up close, and I can say that he deserves this stellar recognition and I am grateful it has come his way.

"Tommy Puckett represents the very best of Christian leadership in times of need, and I thank God for him." (TAB)
