South Carolina convention nominates new leader

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Baptist Convention executive board voted unanimously March 27 to nominate James Austin to the executive director-treasurer position.

A seven-member search committee chaired by Tim Williams, pastor of Roebuck Baptist Church, Roebuck, S.C., brought the nomination to the board.

"To the best of our abilities and with the discernment God has given us … we believe the man we are presenting to you today has a heart for God," Williams said.

Austin, an associate executive director with the Missouri Baptist Convention, currently oversees Sunday School, family life, worship, youth, college, technology and ministerial services.

A former pastor, he has served churches in Georgia and Virginia. He also has served as a trustee with the International Mission Board and Truett McConnell College in Cleveland, Ga. Austin and his wife, Debbie, have five children.

A special called meeting of the convention will be held April 26 at Riverland Hills Baptist Church, Irmo, S.C., where messengers from South Carolina Baptist churches will vote.
