Pennye Anderson has led the Covington County jail ministry in Andalusia for 24 years. She also leads the deaf ministry at First Baptist Church, Andalusia, and serves as a children’s Sunday School teacher.
Q: What led you to join the prison ministry?
A: My neighbor Norma McLelland asked me to go with her to visit a lady in jail. We are raising money for a transition home for women named Norma’s Nest in honor of Mrs. McLelland.
Q: Why have you continued this activity?
A: It is a passion that God has laid on my heart.
Q: What does the ministry demand?
A: I spend an hour and a half every Wednesday night with the women. We have Bible study, prayer and music. There is a team of ladies that helps me.
Q: What do you get from the ministry?
A: I’m blessed as I see the women develop a love for studying God’s Word.
Q: How do family members support you?
A: My husband has always been supportive. When my children were young, they were at the church’s Wednesday activities.
Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?
A: I will continue to go every week, and there will be more leadership with the transition home.
Q: What difference will this ministry make for you in the future?
A: It is gratifying to serve God in this way.
