ATHENS, Greece — An Athens court ruled Jan. 31 that the closing of evangelical radio station Channel 2000 by Greek authorities was illegal, and the station can begin broadcasting again. Since the station’s closure in early December, evangelical believers and organizations in Greece and abroad sent many letters of protest to the Greek authorities.
The court has ordered all confiscated equipment returned, and it acquitted Pastor Lakis Regas, who had been accused of illegal operations. Anti-proselytism laws have been in force in Greece since the late 1930s.
In the last 70 yeas, hundreds of non-Orthodox believers have been sentenced to exile, prison terms and fines because of their evangelistic activities, although the situation has improved in recent years. Before the December closure, Channel 2000 has been operating and proclaiming the Good News for 11 years without any problem.
